Chapter 32: We didn't make it!

Unfortunately, we missed our target. We didn’t raise the seed money we needed by the end of 2019! It’s a shame because we thought we were really close at times but as I have heard many times, until the money is in the bank it doesn’t matter how close you are.

Those of you who have been following this journey may be a bit disappointed, some may even shed a tear knowing what we have been through to get this far. Others who see us competitors will now be doing a happy dance, but don’t get your dancing shoes out just yet. The thing is we are happier than ever, it’s so funny how things work out…

I’ve always been a believer in everything happening for a reason. I’m sitting here today writing this blog on a Sunday afternoon for a reason. It turns out that everything we have done over the last 18 months with Marlin has all happened for a reason and was all required for something we never knew at the time until now. Not because we were destined not to raise money, but because of something entirely different which quite frankly we did not forsee coming.

Now as many of you know we have always championed startups. Not only were we building one (and still are by the way!) we could really resonate with others who were doing the same. It’s why we started the #MondayMention and why we have really been interested in talking to so many other startups about their own journey. No underlying agenda, just a genuine interest in how they have progressed and the challenges they are facing. Where we could help, we always did, we’ve recommended people to each other and advised in every area we could to try in some way to help other founders and teams with their journey. Anyone reading this who has had that help from us, you’re very welcome and we hope you succeed, we really do.

This all sounds like a farewell speech and words of a failed venture, but it is nothing of the sort. It’s the beginning of something new, a brand-new chapter for us.

Spit It Out

About six months ago I was introduced to a contact who was looking to help us with our fundraising. The goalposts changed at the last minute and you may recall we walked away from the deal with this particular advisor. During our initial conversations they mentioned HOST 2019 and that we should look into attending this event. Thanks to Steph’s handy work we managed to get a stand in the startup zone which we attended in November. Although it wasn’t the right audience for us, it was a chance to get into a startup zone and chat with other likeminded startups. Just as well we did..!

We had a conversation with a few other startups about something that had been a challenge to them as it was for us too from the outset, those conversations have since opened up a brand new opportunity for us and successfully attracting our first client with a few others interested too in the new venture.

I am itching to tell you what it is, but I can’t! I will be shot if I do…

For now, all you need to know is that it could help every single startup that is either just starting out or already established and growing. We are super excited about this new venture, but we still have some work to do before and official launch date in Feb 2020. I will report here and on other social channels when we are ready to spill the beans officially. I promise.

Knowing that we are going to help startups and the opportunities that it could bring them is so exciting I really could write a really long blog about it right now, but I have to refrain…. Arghhhhh.

What About Marlin?

So, what about Marlin? Well we have developed the platform, we have employers and job seekers still registering and we will continue to be active in that venture. Our focus on fundraising will not be a priority now as we are not ready yet it seems from all the feedback we have received. We know there are quite a few things we need to do to be ready, but we know we also need time. This means we have the resources to also focus on another startup which is what we are going to do.

In early January I will let you know what it is.

Until then we would like to thank all of our loyal readers, followers and all of the connections we have made in the last 18 months. It has been such a great journey and if it wasn’t for the Marlin journey, we wouldn't be starting something else trying to solve a real issue for startups.

Have a great festive period with your families. Nargis, Steph and I wish you the very best for 2020 and beyond. We also look forward to reporting back to you in January with an update.

Until 2020…
